The Round Chapel, Hackney, London
Tai Chi started at the Round Chapel in 1999. From the beginning the classes were very special for two good reasons: the people and the venue. Most of the students have been local people ranging in age from children as young as nine to mature people well in their eighties, with a range of professions equally as extensive. The mix of male to female is generally about half and half. There has always been a strong sense of community amongst the students – those that weren't acquainted with each other at the start of the course certainly are by the end. The Round Chapel itself – the main landmark of Lower Clapton – is even more impressive inside than it is out. Of all the spaces I have taught in, the Round Chapel is by far the most conducive to Tai Chi – the high domed ceiling forces the spirits to lift and the lack of sharp gloomy corners makes the space feel clean and positive.
